Bush Fire Preparedness

Whether your horses are located at home or on an agistment property you must have a fire safety plan.


If you agist talk to the property owner about their fire safety plan.

If you have agistees ensure they are aware of your fire safety plan.


If you decide to leave


  • Go early, before roads become hazardous and to allow for horses being difficult.

  • Move your horse to a safer place away from the property and out of the fire's path. Have a list of possible places to go. Always have a back up!

  • Grab your emergency survival kit.


If you decide to stay and defend or are unable to leave


  • Horses are good at avoiding fire if they are in a large open space with minimal vegetation. The ideal location will allow horses to run through or around fire and contain a reliable water supply.

  • Remove all gear including rugs.

  • Do not let your horses out on the roads as they put emergency services and other evacuees in more danger.


Horse Emergency Survival Kit


Prepare a kit before the bushfire season starts and fill with items to help you and your horse survive a fire or natural disaster.


Pony Club NSW recommends the below items should be included in your kit:

  • Wire Cutters

  • Sharp Knife

  • Waterproof torch

  • Drinking water & water container

  • Feed

  • Extra lead rope and halter (leather is safer during a fire)

  • Copy of ownership papers/membership/insurance papers

  • Equine wound first aid supplies (sprays/ointment, bandages, tape, scissors etc)

  • Pliers

  • Eyewash


Evacuation Locations in WA

  • State Equestrian Centre

  • Magic Millions

  • Ascot Race Course

  • Various Pony Club Grounds will open

  • Family or friends properties

  • Club members properties


The EASE WA Facebook page will run a thread filled with offers of housing or evacuation help from members of the West Australian equine community.


Bushfire Warning Levels


ADVICE - A fire has started but there is no immediate threat to lives or homes. Be aware and keep up to date.

WATCH AND ACT - There is a possible threat to lives or homes. You need to leave or get ready to defend – do not wait and see.

EMERGENCY WARNING - You are in danger and need to take immediate action to survive. There is a threat to lives or homes.

ALL CLEAR - Take care to avoid any dangers and keep up to date.


Leaving early is the safest option for you and your horses.
