I'm sure if we could we would all wrap our precious steeds in Cotton wool and bubble wrap. But I don't think the horses would appreciate the daily wrapping and probably still manage to do themselves damage.
Thus, we humans must be prepared for any eventuality and a first aid kit (or two) are handy things to have at the ready.
It is recommended that we have a kit handy in the stables, tack room or feed room and also to have a kit with you when travelling.
Store your supplies in a moisture proof box with the following recommended items inside:
2x rolls of Vet wrap
2x rolls of adhesive bandage
1x roll of cotton wool
1x roll of cotton gauze
2x disposable nappies or sanitary napkins (pressure pads to stop bleeding)
1x bottle of wound cleaning agent (e.g. iodine/betadine)
1x bottle of wound antiseptic (e.g. purple spray/Cetrigen)
1x digital thermometer
1x 60ml syringe (for flushing wounds)
1x container of soothing, cooling liniment (e.g. Rapigel)
1x container of soothing antiseptic (e.g. Septicide)
1x small pack of salt for making salt solutions
1x pack of gauze swabs
1x pair of curved blunt ended scissors
1x torch
1x pair of tweezers
2x poultice packs
The travelling kit could be slightly smaller, but ensure you have enough supplies to get your horse somewhere safe (home or vet) with the injury. Wound treatment items are essential.
